What is HACCP and do you need a certificate?

What is HACCP?

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. It is a way of identifying the food safety hazards in a business and controlling them at the points where things can go wrong: when food is received, stored, prepared, cooled and reheated. Think of fixed temperatures, shelf life, cleaning and personal hygiene.

Is HACCP mandatory?

Yes, for every business that prepares, processes or sells food. European rules require you to work according to the HACCP principles. In Dutch hospitality you may use the Hygiene Code for the Hospitality Sector for this, and the NVWA checks that you follow it. Employers must also make sure that staff who handle food are instructed or trained in hygiene.

Is a HACCP certificate mandatory?

A personal HACCP diploma is not required by law. You do need to show that you know how to handle food safely, which is why many employers ask for a certificate. Your HACCP certificate shows that you completed the course and passed the test: useful when applying for a job, and as proof that your team has been trained.

How do you get your HACCP certificate?

Take the online HACCP course with six modules, practise with the questions and take the test. Once you pass, you get your personal HACCP certificate with your name on it straight away. Most students finish in about two hours.
